The Georgia ARES HF Net will be called into session at 8:30 A.M. on Wednesday, February 8th, for the Statewide Tornado Drill.

Many other SKYWARN (VHF/UHF) nets will also be called into session during the drill.

The actual drill will be held at 9:00 A.M.

Everyone is encouraged to check into one or more of the severe weather nets during the drill.

Skywarn Spotter Classes

Good afternoon everyone,

I was contacted today by the National Weather Service in Tallahassee regarding our interest level in spotter classes that are being planned during the last two weeks of this month.

I have received limited feedback from those with interest in participating in a basic class this spring. It would be very helpful for planning purposes to know if there are others in the Southwest Georgia area that would like to participate so please let us know.

This is particularly true if some of you would like to have a group participate and need to request a specific date for a class to be held. The National Weather Service is willing to at least consider setting a date for a class that would work for the majority of those interested so please let me know your thoughts as soon as possible.

Again, the plan right now is to conduct on-line classes on dates yet to be determined in the weeks of February 13-17 and 20-24. The number of classes to be held will be dependent on the amount of interest received and we need to provide suggestions on dates for the classes if large groups have a need or preference.

We are always willing to host a class in Thomasville so if that works best for you or your group I know John, KE4RWR, will be happy to arrange a classroom setting just let us know.

KK4FGM needs Ops

All,
Robbie Pitts, KK4FGM, has coordinated a ham radio presentation for a communications class at Moultrie Tech this Thursday, Feb. 2nd, at 10AM (Building B Room 223).

This is meant to be an introduction to ham radio for those in the class.Anyone who can attend the presentation (10AM – 11AM) is encouraged to do so to help answer questions, aid discussion, etc.

There is also a need for people to monitor the Moultrie repeater (146.79- T141.3) in order to demonstrate radio communications during the presentation.

Robbie has done a great job of putting together this presentation, so let’s lend him our support in introducing new people to the hobby of ham radio!

Andrew Kitchens, brother of Bill, KW4EF, came to our last test session to test for a Technician class license.
He did very well on the test and left as a new Ham. His call was issued this week, and Andrew is now KD8ROW!

Upgrade Class Book Orders

Hi All,

If you plan on attending the Upgrade classes on February 18th & 25th, and need a study guide, I need to know NOW.

The price is $15 per book, and I need to place the order by February 6th to insure we have them in plenty of time.

If you want to order it yourself, before the classes begin, you can order from HRO, AES or direct from the ARRL, but the price will be higher than $15. If you want to do this, email me at ke4fgf@arrl.net and I’ll provide you with ordering info.

Severe Weather Awareness Week is Feb. 6-10

Severe Weather Awareness Week for the state of Georgia will be February 6-10, 2012. This year, the topics to be covered include:

Monday, February 6 – Family Preparedness
Tuesday, February 7 – Thunderstorm and Lightning Safety
Wednesday, February 8 – Tornado Safety (Tornado Drill)
Thursday, February 9 – Flooding
Friday, February 10 – After the Storm

In addition, the statewide tornado drill will be held on Wednesday, Feburary 8 at 9am. If it needs to be rescheduled due to severe weather, the backup date is Friday, February 10 at 9am.

Walt, KI4TFL, has had a rough few months. We heard today that he passed away quietly in his sleep sometime Saturday morning.

Walt was one of our Military Vets and was chosen as our 2011 Military Vet of the Year. He was a Marine who served in the Pacific during WWII and was twice wounded during the invasion of Guam.

Dan, KF4WF, delivered the award to him, as Walt hasn’t been able to travel.

The funeral will be at the Faith Funeral Home in Havana, at 6972 Fla-GA highway, at 2 pm on Wednesday.

The viewing will be at 1pm on Wednesday at the funeral home. Walt’s wife, Arlene. has not requested any pall bearers.

Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers as she faces the tough days ahead….

Walton Ray Hendricks, 82, of Grady County, GA passed away Saturday, January 21, 2012 at Grady General Hospital in Cairo.

The funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 25, 2012 at chapel of Faith Funeral Home with Pastor Gordon Adank officiating the service. Interment will follow at Woodland Cemetery. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Mr. Hendricks was born September 30, 1928 in Brunswick, GA. He was a U S Marine veteran, and a Greyhound Bus driver for 39 years. He was a member of Concordia Baptist Church. He was a Ham Radio operator, and a member of the Thomasville Amateur Radio Club. He operated with the call sign KI4TFL.

Survivors include his wife Arlene Hendricks of Grady County; step children Scott Hampton; Loree Weeks; Michael Weeks all of Tallahassee and Susan Weeks of Panama City Beach, FL. Three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Good Morning All,

I would like to express my appreciation to the TARC members, families, and friends who attended the annual fish fry in 2011; the fish fry was the last time Maxine was able to get out in public, and she enjoyed the event immensely. A few days after the fish fry she took her first “turn for the worse” and was unable to spend any time in public.

Amy and I will remember this event fondly, as it provided one last chance for Maxine to enjoy herself and spend time with other people; we thank each of you who made this a special event for both Maxine and us.

Maxine Black of Cairo died January 17, 2012 at her residence.

Born January 23, 1941 in Attica, Ohio, she is the daughter of the late Charles Ward Smith and Sylvia Xoa TenPenny. In August 1964, she married to Raymond Eugene Black who preceded her in death on June 17, 1974.

She was a graduate of Tiffin High School, served in the U.S. Army as a dental lab technician and a Wal-Mart Associate for Wal-Mart stores. She was a member of Relay For Life, American Legion, V.F.W. Ladies Auxillary, all in Thomasville, and member of the United Auto Workers Union of Ohio.

Survivors include daughters, Amy and Virgil Castleberry of Cairo, Charlotte and Martin Scheese of Monticello, Fla.; son, Eric Black of Cairo; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m., Saturday at the funeral home.

TARC Welcomes MARC!!

During their monthly meeting on Tuesday, January 10th, the Madison ARES group voted to become a new radio club and will now be known as “MARC” – the Madison Amateur Radio Club.

We congratulate the members and know that MARC will be doing great things in the future! (by the way…where’s Pat?…behind the camera?)

February Classes

TARC holds classes for new hams and upgrades twice a year, and 2012′s first session is set for the final two Saturdays in February, the 18th and 25th. We’ll be in our regular classrooms at Archbold Memorial Hospital.

The classes are free and run from 9am – 4pm, with a Test Session following each class. Our Instructors are:

Tech Class – Mike, KE4FGF, Jackson, KJ4NFB, and Zach, KJ4LOO
General Class – Lowell, NY4D, and Thomas, W4TBJ
Extra Class – Terry, N0TW, and Mary, KI4JOO

We teach fom the ARRL Q&A Manuals, and if you need a copy, email Mike at ke4fgf@arrl.net and he can get you a copy for $15. He’ll need to know by February 6th, 2012, to insure they arrive on time. You can also get these manuals direct from the ARRL, at www.arrl.org or any of the online Amateur Radio Dealers like HRO or AES, but the price will be higher.

The cost for taking a test is $14 and you’ll also need a picture ID, and if upgrading, a copy of your current license.

Parents, you need to be aware that you’ll need your child’s Social Security Number for the FCC paperwork when they pass a test. That’s a Federal requirement, not ours.
