It is with great happiness that I report to you that Zach, KJ4LOO, has asked his girlfriend, Cassidy, to marry him and she has accepted!!

It’s really great to see one of our young folks take this step…makes us all feel like proud Aunts and Uncles, doesn’t it?

Our congratulations and warmest thoughts are with this young couple as they chart the course for their new life together!

2012 Hurrex Drill

The annual GEMA and EMA Hurricane Drill (HURREX) will be active May 14 (Monday), May 15 (Tuesday), and May 16 (Wednesday). This drill will simulate a major hurricane (Hurricane “Jerry”) striking the Georgia coast near Savannah which would require the evacuation of Savannah and coastal regions. The statewide ARES Net will be active during the drill in support of GEMA and local EMA’s and other served agencies, with the following planned schedule:

Monday, May 14. (Pre landfall of Hurricane) VHF and UHF and D-star systems active.

No planned Statewide ARES Net. 3975 kHz ”guarded” if necessary.

Tuesday, May 15. (Post landfall of Hurricane) Landfall will occur in morning hours.

9:30 A.M. Georgia ARES Net 3975 kHz active for ADMN and coordination purposes. All stations are asked to check in.

1:00 P.M. Georgia Traffic Net active on 7287.5 kHz to pass traffic going to Georgia coastal areas.

2:00 P.M. Georgia ARES Net active on 7275 kHz to be of assistance until 3:30 P.M.

4:00 P.M. Georgia ARES Net active on 3975 kHz on standby for any traffic if needed until 5;30 P.M.

Wednesday, May 16. (Recovery and de-briefing)

9:30 A.M. The Georgia ARES Net will be active on 3975 kHz for any other traffic and de-briefing. The drill will conclude at 1:00 P.M.

All amateurs are encouraged to take part in this years’ HURREX Drill.

Peacock Day Update

Hi All,

The 2012 Peacock Day Parade went off as planned on Saturday, May 12th, despite an initial threat of rain.

Wynona provided another great “Tailgate Breakfast” for the folks who helped handle this event. Those people were:
KI4RGD, AJ4TO, KJ4UKR, KJ4KUK, N7SDQ, AL7NS, KC4LYC, KK4HYB, KK4DZB, KA3FZO, KF4HSM, and KE4FGF.

It was also our last chance to see Josh, AJ4TO, who graduated from VSU last weekend, and will be moving to the Atlanta area shortly.

A good time was had by all, and the Pavo Civic Club, who sponsors this event, expressed their gratitude for our help numerous times during the day. Helping with this event get us free use of their facilities if we need them for an event.

Radio Reunion – 2012

Today, a number of folks attended the 2012 Radio Reunion, hosted in Tallahassee by the Tallahassee Amateur Radio Society.

The lunch centered on smoked chicken and everyone enjoyed full plates, followed by some fine desserts. A good time was had by all.

Grady Tornado Drill

Hello Everyone,

As most of you know, Grady County and the Cairo Fire Dept. had a severe weather drill on Friday, April 27th. It turned out to be a tornado, which touched down just south of downtown Cairo with damage, injuries, and fatalities.

The drill started pretty close to 9:00 AM and was over by 10:45 AM. The Grady ARES Net was activated at 8:30am. The drill went very well with all the ARES personnel doing what they do best. We had excellent coverage in case of any communication failure, with a job well done by all. Special thanks go to:

Stewart Chandler, KJ4GOJ——Although Stewart was working just up the road from the scene he was able to help out with the drill. Thanks for that one also.

Again thanks to all who were there. A special thanks goes out to Leann Doering. She was going to be stationed at the Red Cross Shelter to help, but at last minute she had to work.

Much was learned and things will be different next time, drill or real thing.

April Test Session Update

Hi All,

The TARC VE Team held our monthly test session at the Thomas County EOC on April 21st at 10am.

Two people showed up, one for a new license, and one for an upgrade.

Arthur Burnley, KK4IPC, got his General license after being a Tech for about 15 minutes, at our session at the Tailgate Hamfest. He wanted to finish the trip and did so in fine style, earning his Extra class ticket.

Arthur’s new call is Ak4UF.

Brian Hesler, a civilian contractor working at Moody AFB has a lot of friends who are Hams, and wanted to join in the fun. He did so with a perfect score on his Tech test!! Brian is from Fredericksburg, VA.

Brian’s new call is KK4JBA.

Congratulations to both these fine gentlemen, and thanks to Steve, KJ4UKR, Bill, KW4EF, Alan, N4KGT, and Mike, KE4FGF, who made up the VE Team.

The next session will be held at the Thomas County EOC on May 19th, at 10am. We hope you will hit the books and get YOUR upgrade!!

TOSRV Day 2

Hi everyone,

The Thomasville Amateur Radio Club worked the second day of the TOSRV bicycle ride as well as the first. The return Metric route was picked up out of the Whigham Community Center lunch stop.

The route went the back roads to end up and finish at Cairo High School. It was a day to remember for most of us. I termed myself “Metric Net Control,” and consider myself lucky to have had a great group of Club members to help.

TOSRV Day 1

TARC had a good turnout to help the Capital City Cyclists with the 2012 “Touring Our Scenic Rural Vistas” bike ride…which we know as “TOSRV.”

Our club has been involved with this event since it began some 30 years ago, and is responsible for the part of the ride between Cairo and Sale City. This year, the stations involved on Saturday were:

KF4GBS, KJ4OSU, AK4KC, KI4RGD, N4KXL, Rudy (our mascot), KE4RWR, KJ4KUK, KJ4UKR, W4TBJ, KJ4SWI, KE4URL, KK4HYB, KK4DZB, NY4D, AI4CW, N0TW, N4KGT, and KE4FGF.

Special thanks to KE4URL for allowing us to use the 145.17 repeater for the event, and to everyone who took time out of their Saturday to help with this event!
